Motivation for running – how to stay motivated in the cold months
As temperatures drop and days get shorter, many people lose the desire to lace up their running shoes. But the winter months are actually one of the best periods to build endurance and strength. With the right strategy, the right gear, and small mental tricks, you can stay motivated all winter long – and be stronger when spring arrives.
1) Set realistic goals
The cold months are not about breaking records – but about consistency. Set small, concrete goals that suit the season. This could be running three times a week, getting 20 minutes of movement per day, or completing a certain number of kilometers per month.
Focus on the process rather than the results. A consistent routine keeps motivation higher than chasing quick improvements.
2) Dress for the conditions
Unpleasant weather can quickly kill motivation. Therefore, make sure you have clothes that protect against cold, wind, and moisture – without becoming heavy. Use layering with breathable materials that wick away sweat, and choose a light jacket that protects against rain and wind.
- Anoraks & jackets – keep the wind out and the body warm
- Tights & pants – provide support and comfort on cold days
- Fleece & long-sleeved tops – ideal as mid-layers

3) Make it easy to get out the door
Plan your runs to fit into your daily life. Lay out your clothes the night before, schedule fixed running times, and choose short, realistic routes. When you make it easy to get started, you remove the biggest barrier – the decision to start.
Another trick is to have a fixed “go-to” outfit that you feel comfortable in. Comfortable and functional clothing removes excuses. Find inspiration in Barsk’s running collection.
4) Train with others
It's easier to get going when someone is waiting for you. Find a running buddy or join a local running club. The social obligation provides extra motivation – especially on dark evenings when the sofa beckons.
You can also challenge friends or colleagues with small monthly goals or participate in virtual runs to keep engagement up.
5) Vary your training
Alternate between tempo runs, easy runs, and hill intervals to keep your body challenged. When you vary your training, you reduce the risk of injuries and maintain motivation. You can also add strength training or short home workouts on rest days.
See our guide to interval running for ideas for short, effective sessions during the winter period.
6) Reward yourself for your efforts
Reward yourself for consistency – not just performance. This could be a new set of workout clothes after a month of consistent runs, a good cup of coffee after a Sunday run, or a quiet morning without an alarm clock.
Small rewards make training positive and uplifting instead of duty-bound.
7) Remember why you run
Motivation is not just about getting in shape – but about doing something good for yourself. Running provides mental peace, fresh air, and new energy during a dark time. When you remember why you started, it becomes easier to continue.
