Running Training 10 km – how to train yourself up to the distance
Dreaming of completing a 10 km run? Whether you're transitioning from the 5 km distance or new to the sport, 10 km requires a bit more structure. Here, we guide you to reach your goal with energy to spare.
Are you ready to take the next step?
10 km is a perfect distance for those who want to challenge themselves without immediately jumping into a half marathon. It demands more endurance but is still manageable and accessible for most with a good plan.
How do you train for a 10 km run?
The most important thing is to run regularly – at least 2-3 times a week – and gradually increase both distance and intensity. If you can already run 5 km without stopping, 6-8 weeks of structured training will be enough to build upon that.
Training Program (6 weeks)
The program below assumes you can run 5 km without a break.
Week 1-2
- 2-3 runs per week of 4-6 km
- Include 1 day of interval training: e.g., 4x400 meters fast + rest
Week 3-4
- Increase one of your runs to 7-8 km
- Continue with intervals or tempo runs
Week 5-6
- Run 9-10 km once a week at a calm pace
- Keep the other runs shorter and faster
